The announcement comes amid renewed concern about adult oral health in England. The Office for Health Improvement and Disparities' latest Adult Oral Health Survey found obvious tooth decay in 41% of adults with natural teeth, compared with 28% in 2009. The British Dental Association subsequently described decay levels as similar to those seen more than 25 years ago, while 42% of adults reported that their oral health affected their daily lives.
Dental crowns are used when a tooth needs more extensive restoration than a smaller repair can provide. A crown covers the existing tooth with a cap, helping restore its shape and function.
