Calgary Prostate Cancer Support Group For Men & Caregivers: Program Update

Non-profit PROSTAID Calgary has announced updates to its monthly support meeting program, welcoming men living with prostate cancer alongside their partners and caregivers. Free and open to all without prior registration, the sessions bring together those navigating the disease with medical professionals and healthcare specialists in a structured, community-led environment.

Each monthly session is designed to give attendees more than a place to listen. Alongside presentations from medical guest speakers, participants can ask questions directly and share their experiences with others facing similar circumstances. Sessions are recorded and made available online, so members who cannot attend in person can stay informed at their own pace.

The physical and emotional toll of prostate cancer extends well beyond initial treatment. A meta-analysis published in the British Journal of Urology International found that post-treatment depression affects roughly one in five prostate cancer survivors, while anxiety around recurrence and ongoing side effects is reported across a significant proportion of men throughout the treatment spectrum.

PROSTAID Calgary's updated program is designed to address these ongoing challenges by providing men and caregivers with consistent support between medical appointments. The organization also offers a dedicated Wives and Caregivers stream — an informal space for partners navigating the emotional demands of supporting someone through a diagnosis and recovery.

"Receiving a prostate cancer diagnosis brings questions that go well beyond what a single medical appointment can cover," said a PROSTAID Calgary spokesperson. "Our meetings give people a place to keep learning, connect with others who genuinely understand what they are going through, and walk away feeling more confident about the road ahead."

Founded in 1993, PROSTAID Calgary has more than 30 years of experience supporting men and families across Calgary and the surrounding communities. The organization's ongoing work is made possible through private contributions, which fund monthly meetings, maintain the prostaid.org website, and support publication of The Digital Examiner journal.
