The program, led by veteran instructor and barefoot massage specialist Mary-Claire Fredette, introduces therapists to FasciAshi—an adaptation of Ashiatsu, a traditional barefoot massage technique that uses overhead bars for balance and the therapist's feet to deliver deep, broad pressure.
Unlike traditional deep tissue techniques that rely on hands, wrists, and elbows, FasciAshi allows therapists to use gravity and the broad surface of the foot to work the muscles, reducing strain on their wrists and increasing effectiveness. The method is designed to prevent therapist burnout while offering clients a massage experience that’s deep, relaxing, and effective.
“Massage therapists shouldn’t have to choose between helping clients and preserving their own bodies,” said Fredette, co-founder of the Center for Barefoot Massage. “With barefoot massage, you can do both—and thrive in your career for years to come.”
The three-day course, priced at $750, includes 24 NCBTMB-approved CE hours and equips therapists with the skills to deliver 90-minute sessions using barefoot techniques. Students will train in small groups for maximum instructor feedback, practice on fellow students and guest clients, and receive guidance on body mechanics, equipment setup, and marketing.
Classes take place in Cincinnati, home to Affinity Barefoot Massage and known for its thriving local culture. The program welcomes massage therapists from across the region, with class sizes kept intentionally small to ensure personalized instruction.
Fredette, who has practiced massage since 1999 and barefoot techniques since 2002, emphasizes that barefoot massage isn’t just a trend—it’s a practical solution for the physical challenges therapists face. Her teaching combines over two decades of hands-on experience with a clear focus on therapist longevity.
