Low EMF Claims For Infrared Saunas: Measurement And Evaluation Guide Published

Creatrix Solutions, manufacturer of the Sauna Fix® radiant near-infrared sauna, has published a guide to what "low EMF" actually means on an infrared sauna listing. Its central point is that the phrase is not a specification. A number only becomes comparable when the manufacturer states what field was measured, in what units, at what distance, whether the sauna was operating, and with what instrument.

The guide draws on the World Health Organization's explainer on electromagnetic fields, which states that electric fields are created by differences in voltage and magnetic fields by the flow of current, that both decrease rapidly with distance from an appliance, and that even apparently similar devices can differ a great deal in the fields they produce. Electric fields are reported in volts per meter and magnetic flux density in microtesla or milligauss, and the guide stresses that the two cannot be compared with each other: a listing that says "EMF = 0.5" without a unit says nothing at all.

Distance, the guide argues, is usually the missing number. A reading of 0.3 milligauss taken a foot from a heater and a reading of 1.0 milligauss taken where the user's back rests are not equivalent tests, and the second is the one that describes exposure. It also separates power-frequency fields from heaters and wiring, which sit near 60 Hz in the United States, from the radiofrequency emissions of Wi-Fi or Bluetooth modules, which WHO treats as a different exposure category and which a 60 Hz meter will not measure.

"Near infrared is not automatically low EMF. Far infrared is not automatically high EMF, or low," the guide states. "The electrical engineering of the particular sauna matters more than the wavelength on the label."

The guide lists ten questions a buyer can put to any manufacturer: what was measured, in what units, where the meter was positioned, at what distance, whether the sauna was operating and at what power level, which instrument was used and what frequencies it covers, whether several locations were tested, and who performed the test. It contrasts a claim such as "ultra-low EMF: less than 1" with a specification that names the field, the result, the position, the distance, and the operating conditions.

A further section explains how a homeowner can take useful readings with a consumer meter: establish a background reading with the sauna off, then measure with the sauna powered, then with the heaters running, at the seating position, the back, the legs, head level, and near the controls, watching the meter through several heater cycles. The guide also notes WHO's conclusion that current evidence does not confirm health consequences from exposure to low-level electromagnetic fields, and frames low-EMF shopping as a question of measurement transparency rather than fear.

Creatrix Solutions applies the same standard to its own product, publishing the readings from two consumer meters taken at the bulb of the Sauna Fix®, with photos of the meter faces. On a Cornet ElectroSmog meter's low-frequency magnetic setting, the device registered 1.0 mG with the sauna off and 0.55 mG with it on a few inches from the lamp, and 0.5 mG off against 0.2 mG on at the meter's second setting. A reading of approximately 0.32 mW/m² of RF was attributed to the room's own wireless signal, as an incandescent bulb carries no transmitter or switching electronics. The company describes these as consumer-meter bench readings rather than laboratory dosimetry, and characterizes the fields as very low rather than absent.
