Mission Prep has published a new guide addressing avoidant attachment styles in teenagers, as these terms hit the mainstream and awareness among parents grows. The resource covers the signs of avoidant attachment, its origins, how it affects a teen's daily life, and treatment options.
"Avoidant attachment in teens often looks like emotional detachment, difficulty trusting others, or discomfort when a parent tries to offer affection," explains Fernanda Perez-Rios, B.S., Associate Executive Director at Mission Prep's California center. "These behaviors typically develop as an unintentional self-protective response rather than as evidence of a character flaw. Reframing a teen's withdrawal in this light can help parents respond with patience instead of frustration."
The roots of avoidant attachment frequently trace back to the caregiver-child relationship, particularly when a child's emotional needs go consistently unacknowledged. Over time, a teen may learn to suppress emotions and keep others at a distance as a way of coping - a pattern that can foster excessive self-reliance and a reluctance to ask for help, sometimes contributing to low self-esteem, anxiety, or depression.
Not every avoidant teen exhibits the same pattern, notes Perez-Rios, who draws a distinction between fearful avoidant and dismissive avoidant styles. "A dismissive avoidant teen tends to maintain steady emotional distance and lean heavily on independence, while a fearful avoidant teen may alternate between seeking closeness and pulling away," she adds. Recognizing which pattern applies matters, since support strategies and treatment approaches differ between the two.
Perez-Rios states that Mission Prep addresses these differences through individualized care, which often includes cognitive behavioral therapy to help teens identify and challenge unhelpful thought patterns, alongside attachment-based family therapy to rebuild trust between teens and caregivers.
