Sutter County Virtual IOP for Teens: Individual & Group Therapy Program Expanded

California Teen Center has announced an update to its treatment offerings, expanding access to its Virtual Intensive Outpatient Program for teens across California, with a particular focus on families in Sutter County. The program is designed to give struggling teens structured mental health support without requiring travel to an in-person facility.

Families in rural and semi-rural parts of Sutter County often face long drives to reach specialized adolescent care, and the Virtual IOP is intended to remove that barrier. Teens can join group therapy, individual sessions, and family therapy sessions from home while still attending school and remaining connected to their usual routines.

Teen mental health concerns remain widespread nationally. According to the CDC's 2023 Youth Risk Behavior Survey, roughly two in five high school students reported persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness, while about one in five adolescents experienced anxiety symptoms severe enough to affect daily functioning. Despite this, many teens still lack access to consistent treatment.

Telehealth is increasingly recognized as one way to close that treatment gap. Research published in the Journal of Clinical Child & Adolescent Psychology found that CBT delivered via telehealth produced outcomes comparable to in-person therapy for youth with anxiety disorders. California Teen Center's Virtual IOP reflects this shift, pairing licensed therapists with psychiatric oversight through secure video sessions.

"Many of the families we work with are juggling school schedules, transportation, and multiple appointments, so removing the commute while keeping the same level of clinical care just makes sense," says a California Teen Center representative. "Our Virtual IOP still includes individual therapy, group therapy, and family sessions, just delivered in a way that fits real family life."

California Teen Center is licensed by the California Department of Health Care Services and accredited by the Joint Commission. The center's continuum of care includes a Day Program, an After School IOP, and the statewide Virtual IOP, addressing anxiety, depression, trauma, OCD, ADHD, school refusal, self-harm, and other adolescent behavioral health concerns.

"Dr. Beheshti and Dr. Armstrong have both been incredibly supportive throughout our journey," one parent recently shared. "We used the telehealth option, and it turned out to be a real benefit for our entire family. Being able to join sessions from home made a difficult time so much easier to manage."

Families in crisis should not rely on outpatient or virtual programs for emergency support. Anyone experiencing a mental health crisis should call or text 988 or go to the nearest emergency room.
