Hawaiian Wildflower follows a woman whose marriage is upended by the arrival of another woman claiming her husband, a plot Johansen built around her belief that genuine love does not simply flip into hate. Darkness Under His Feet centers on a newspaper editor accused of murdering a former employer, with the narrative informed by the author's own years in the charismatic movement.

Alongside the novel releases, Johansen published a blog post examining what defines the Christian whodunit genre and why it continues to resonate with readers of faith.
Johansen's analysis identifies several defining qualities of the genre: clean storytelling free of graphic content, a treatment of justice as a moral imperative rather than plot convenience, and characters whose faith is active and consequential rather than a surface detail.
